about

Eddie "Son" House recorded in the 1920s and 1930s. He put music on the back burner for a couple of decades when he worked as a porter on The Empire State Express. He lived in Rochester, New York at 61 Greig St. during this time. I know the address because it was printed on the liner notes of his '65 release, "The Real Folk Blues", released a year after his rediscovery by a couple of blues musicologists.

lyrics

I’m walking in the neighborhood where Son once lived
Lots of big old houses with big front porches
Son House lived here for many years
When he worked on the Empire State Express
He’d cross the river at the end of his shift
To his wife and guitar and his TV set
Down at 61 Greig St, Rochester New York
61 Greig St Rochester New York

Hear the wheels going bumpety-bump
Through the countryside, past the city junk
Hear the rhythm that the driver made
Son worked hard but he liked to play
He loved the bottle just a little too much
But he could make his music, never lost his touch
Down at 61 Greig St, Rochester New York
61 Greig St, Rochester New York

He sang “Preachin’ Blues” and “Grinning In Your Face”
“John The Revelator” and “Clarksdale Moan”
“My Black Mama” still sounds real good
He was a bluesman doing what a bluesman should
Son made his music at the end of the day
Playing guitar, not fade away
Down at 61 Greig St, Rochester New York
61 Greig St, Rochester New York

about

John Pippus Vancouver

"Reminiscent and harkening in spirit, in some ways, to Neil Young’s classic “Harvest,” Pippus and friends have made something much richer in tone and certainly more fitting for 2022.”
